When women come to SHELifts – my women-only weight training classes – for the first time, they’re often nervous. Not just because they’re trying something new, but also because there are a lot of myths around weightlifting for women. I thought I would bust some of those myths, so that you can appreciate the real benefits of weight training without worry.

  1. You’ll get bulky

This is the biggest one, and the one that scares a lot of women off trying weights. Trust me when I say that to become bulky takes a lot more than lifting heavy things – it takes eating, training, supplements and a huge amount of effort to become bulky.

What weight training will do is make your muscles stronger (NOT bigger), it will make them denser, and it will make you feel like a superhero.

  1. Strength training won’t help you lose weight

If weightloss is your primary aim, you may think that cardio is the only way to go. Not true – strength or weight training can actually give you a more effective method of losing weight than an equal amount of cardio. And it’s way more fun.

There is the truth that muscle does weigh more than fat, so if the scales are your only measure, then it’s time to think again. Lighter doesn’t always mean leaner, so look at your body and the way your clothes fit to measure your progress.

  1. You’re too old

As we get older the potential for brittle bones increases, and this often puts older women off weight training for fear of injury. BUT strength training is actually beneficial – studies have shown that lifting weights can help preserve bone density, including for post-menopausal women. It’s actually an incredible way to keep your body healthy as you age.

  1. Muscle turns into fat

Sometimes people don’t start training because they’ve heard this myth and they worry that if they stop training, all that muscle will immediately transform into fat. This is completely not true – muscle and fat are two completely different types of tissue. If you stop training your muscles will shrink, and you’ll burn fewer calories per day, which can affect your weight, but muscles do not turn to fat. Ever.

Julia first came to me in early 2014. She wanted to lose weight, increase her body tone and improve her health and overall fitness. But, as she pointed out when we first started working together, she wasn’t a fan of exercise.

I work with a lot of people who say they don’t like to exercise – they get bored, tired or frustrated, and give up before they see real results. Working with a personal trainer is a great way to keep yourself inspired, because I don’t just run you through the same old exercises time and time again.

My approach is to find the way that works for you, and that’s exactly what I did for Julia. In fact, she commented on my friendly yet no nonsense, down to earth approach to her training.

To keep Julia interested and motivated, it was important to vary the routines we worked on. So I devised a combination of weight training, circuits and gym time, so that there was plenty of variety.

Julia joined my SHELifts classes, where I teach women how to safely and effectively start lifting weights. In no time, she was deadlifting with the best of them.

Of course, the outcome is the crucial bit when it comes to an exercise journey like Julia’s, so how did she do? Well, the pictures speak for themselves – you can see how amazing her transformation has been – taking her from a size 14/16 right down to 8/10! Just as importantly, her stamina and overall fitness has increased considerably, she feels younger, and her confidence has massively increased.

But enough from me, here’s what Julia has to say about her experience with Amrit Training and Therapy:

A few weeks ago, I was asked who my ideal client was.

My answer:
The woman who wants to be able to exercise with weights safely and confidently with an element of fun thrown in.

Weight training is an excellent form of exercise, it is both time and energy efficient. It works for you from a cardio-vascular aspect, as well as strengthening and sculpting your joints and muscles respectively. You don’t need to be constantly jiggling about on the treadmill for ages or pounding the streets after dark so no one will see you! There’s a chance you could develop an injury, and lets face it, lots of ‘bits’ tend to head south!!!!

Muscles!!….Oh no the fear creeps in, I don’t want to be a muscle Mary!!

Well muscle Mary has spent years perfecting her elite athletic physique, so we are in no danger of hulking out 😉 just yet .
Women are at risk of osteoporosis, the thinning of bones, and one of the things we can do to prevent this is to strengthen our joints by training our muscles to behave! Sit up tall, don’t slouch, hips under, belly tight, boobs out!!! That’s what most of my clients hear from me, and that’s simply what your muscles need to do to support your amazing bodies.

Amrit Training and Therapy brings you SheLIFTS a women only weight training class in Bush Hill park, Enfield. I want to bring weights to women in a fun, relaxed and safe environment, and give women the confidence to use the free weights areas of the gyms and put those grunting men to shame! Give your muscles a chance to move the way they should, with strength and beauty all in one.
